Local Vibes

What your town is talking about,
in the app you run the store from.

Local Vibes is the local news and events reader built into UpChannels. It searches Google News for your city plus the keywords that matter to your trade, then groups the last 30 days of headlines into local business news, industry news, local economic news, and four kinds of community event.

How Local Vibes works

Local news and events, narrowed to your city and your trade

A small retailer's demand is local. Local Vibes puts the local record — press coverage and community events for your city, narrowed to your trade — on a page inside the same app that holds your sales, inventory and customers.

Why it exists

Most of what moves a small store is
reported locally, or not at all.

A new apartment complex breaking ground, a storm that took out air conditioning across the county, a competitor closing two towns over, a festival that shuts the main road for a weekend — these are the things that change what a garden store, a furniture showroom, a bike shop or an HVAC company should be stocking, staffing and advertising next month. They show up in the local paper and the regional trade press, not in a national dashboard.

Owners with no marketing staff do not have time to read six outlets a week. Local Vibes does the searching, keeps the last 30 days, and puts the headlines one click from the order screen. What you do with them is your call — the page reports, it does not act on your behalf.

What owners use it for

Spotting a weekend when a festival or a big game will change foot traffic and delivery routesCatching housing, construction and consumer-spending stories that run ahead of appliance, furniture and home-services demandKeeping up with trade news — recalls, model changes, efficiency rules — without a subscription to a trade magazineFinding community events worth sponsoring, and the organizers to call about themGiving a marketing conversation with the UpChannels team something local to point at
Local Relevant News — three groups
  • Local Business — general local business news
  • Industry Specific — news about your trade
  • Economic Context — local economic developments
Events — four groups
  • Fairs and Festivals
  • Sports Events
  • Music Events
  • Women Events
Events are drawn from press coverage of events, not from a ticketing feed — there are no RSVPs, ticket links or calendar sync.
Two tabs

What is being reported,
and what is coming up.

The page has two tabs. Local Relevant News splits results into three groups — Local Business, Industry Specific and Economic Context — and Events splits them into four: Fairs and Festivals, Sports Events, Music Events and Women Events. Every group runs its own search and carries its own article count and its own refresh button.

Each result is a card with the headline, the publication date shown in your store's own time zone, and a color-coded badge naming the outlet. Clicking it opens the publisher's own page in a new tab. UpChannels stores no article text and rewrites nothing — you read the source, credited, the way the source published it.

Industry profiles

You never face
an empty search box.

When your store is set up in UpChannels it is attached to an industry profile — a prebuilt template for furniture, electronics, apparel, HVAC, plumbing, landscaping, liquidation, appliance retail, appliance repair, auto repair, restaurants, beauty services, or a general profile for anything else. Each template carries the tax defaults, the partner-network suggestions, and the Local Vibes keyword sets for that trade.

So a clothing store searches “fashion trends”, “seasonal fashion” and “apparel retail” against its city, with “retail sales trends” and “consumer spending” for economic context, while a plumbing company searches its own terms — without anybody in the store writing a query. The keyword lists live on the industry template, which the UpChannels team maintains; the city is yours to change at any time.

How a search is built

  1. 1. City. Taken from your business address, or whatever you type in the location box.
  2. 2. Keywords. Up to three per group, from your industry profile.
  3. 3. Search. Each city-plus-keyword pair is run against Google News, by UpChannels servers, on a route that requires you to be signed in.
  4. 4. Filter. Results older than 30 days are dropped, duplicate links are removed, the rest are sorted newest first and capped at 30 per group.

If your organization has no industry profile, or the profile has no Local Vibes keywords yet, the page says so at the top instead of quietly filling the screen with generic national news.

Your city, and the next one over

Cached for four hours,
refreshed whenever you want.

Results are kept in your browser for four hours per city and per tab, so the page opens instantly the second and third time you check it that day rather than re-running a dozen searches. When you want fresher results, refresh a single group or all of them and the cache is rebuilt.

The location box is the part owners use most. If you are opening a second location, running delivery into a neighboring county, or weighing an ad buy in the next town, type that city in and read its news and events the same way — then hit Reset to come back to your own.

Local Vibes sits in Growth, beside the tools that act on what it finds

In the UpChannels sidebar, Local Vibes lives in the Growth section — next to Customers Nurturing, the Communications Hub, SMS Campaigns, Reviews Booster, Ads Insights, Competitors Monitor, Partners Network and the Loyalty Program. That placement is the point. A festival on the calendar is worth knowing about because the same subscription can send the SMS campaign, book the deliveries around it, and show you afterwards whether the ads you ran that week moved store sales.

It is included in every UpChannels plan — Basic, Pro and Premium — rather than being one of the paid add-ons like Bank Reconciliation or integrated card payments, and there is nothing to connect or configure beyond having a business address and an industry on your store. Every plan starts with a 14-day free trial and no credit card.

Local Vibes reads and reports. It does not post to social media, buy ads, contact event organizers or message customers on your behalf — those are separate parts of UpChannels, and some of them are things our team runs for you.
Common questions

Local Vibes questions, answered

Does Local Vibes cost extra, or is it in my plan?
It is included. Local Vibes is part of the standard UpChannels subscription on Basic, Pro and Premium — it is not one of the paid add-ons such as Bank Reconciliation or integrated card payments. Plans are priced per store with two users included, and every plan starts with a 14-day free trial and no credit card; the current numbers are on the pricing page.
Where does the news actually come from?
From Google News. UpChannels runs each search server-side against the Google News feed for US English sources and shows you what comes back: the headline, the publication date, and a badge naming the outlet that published it. Clicking a card opens that publisher's own page in a new tab. No article text is stored, summarized or rewritten — Local Vibes is a reader over the local press, not a content generator.
Can I look up a city other than the one my store is in?
Yes. The page starts on the city in your business address, but there is a location box at the top: type any city, press Search, and both tabs re-run for that city. A Reset button puts you back on your own. Results are cached separately for each city for four hours, so flipping between your town and the next county over is instant after the first look.
How does it know what is relevant to a clothing store rather than a plumbing company?
Through the industry profile attached to your store. UpChannels ships prebuilt profiles for apparel, electronics, furniture, HVAC, plumbing, landscaping, liquidation, appliance retail, appliance repair, auto repair, restaurants and beauty services, plus a general one for anything else, and each carries its own Local Vibes keyword sets. A clothing store searches terms like "seasonal fashion" and "retail sales trends" against its city; a plumbing company searches "water heater" and "construction activity". Nobody in the store has to write a query.
Can I edit the keywords it searches for myself?
Not today — and this is the honest limitation of the feature. The keyword sets live on the industry profile template, which the UpChannels team maintains centrally so every store in a trade benefits from an improvement at once. What you control from the store is the city. If the terms for your trade are pulling the wrong kind of story, tell your UpChannels contact and the profile gets adjusted.
Does the Events tab let me RSVP or buy a sponsorship slot?
No. The Events tab surfaces press coverage of fairs and festivals, sports, music and women-focused events near you — it is not a ticketing or calendar integration, so there are no RSVPs, ticket links or calendar sync. Treat it as an early-warning list: it tells you a weekend is going to be busy, or that an organizer exists, and you contact them yourself.
Will this find anything useful for a really small town?
It depends on whether outlets covering your area are indexed by Google News, which is thinner for small towns than for metros. Two things help: the page searches your trade terms alongside the city name, so regional and trade coverage surfaces even when the town itself is quiet, and you can widen the search to the county seat or nearest city from the location box. Coverage is US English sources, so it is not built for non-English local press.

Local Vibes is one part of UpChannels

Local Vibes is the local news and events reader inside UpChannels, the all-in-one platform for small retailers and service businesses — clothing, garden and furniture stores, liquidation warehouses, HVAC, plumbing and lawn-care companies. It searches Google News for the city in your business address plus the keywords attached to your industry profile, then groups the last 30 days of headlines into local business news, industry news, local economic news, and four categories of community event, each card naming the outlet and linking to the publisher. It is part of the standard UpChannels subscription rather than a paid add-on, and you can point it at any other city from the page.

UpChannels is an all-in-one platform for small retailers and service businesses — sales, inventory, customers, scheduling, delivery, payments and finance in one system — and a real team that builds your website, runs your ads, and automates the busywork. Every capability below is included in the same subscription, with no integration to wire up between them.

The product moves faster than this page. UpChannels ships updates most weeks, so a description here can lag what is already in the software. Where the two disagree, the running product is the current version — tell us if you find one and we will correct the page.
