Square runs the counter. The argument is about what happens after the sale.

If your business ends at the register, Square is the better buy. It publishes its card rates plainly, we found no per-user software fee anywhere on its retail pricing page, and it ships a staff time clock and shift scheduling in Square Shifts plus its own payroll at $35/mo and $6 per person paid — none of which UpChannels has. One caveat you should know before comparing bills: Square’s retail pricing page renders its subscription prices in the browser and gave us no monthly figure at all on 2026-09-14, so this page quotes none, and neither should anyone else who has not read it from Square. UpChannels Pro at $149/mo per store earns its price only when the sale is the beginning of the work: a delivery that has to be routed and signed for, a service or repair job with hours and parts against it, a lease-to-own or trade-in tender that has to be rung up as itself, and a month-end that has to produce a P&L and a balance sheet rather than a sales report. Buy Square if you sell it and they carry it out; look at us if your staff carries it out.

Comparing UpChannels Pro — $149/mo per store, 2 users included with Square for Retail Square Plus — the tier that first carries inventory and purchase orders and that includes Square Shifts (Square publishes this plan’s card rates but no monthly subscription figure rendered on its pricing pages for us on 2026-09-14). Every fact about Square for Retail below was read from their own published pages on . Prices change — check theirs before you decide.

What you needUpChannelsSquare for Retail
What does one store pay per month?Pro is $149/mo per store (list $299), 2 users included, single location. Basic is $99 and Premium $199. 14-day free trial, no credit card. One-time setup fee currently $0 (list $300 on Pro and Premium). Not stated here, because we could not read one. Square’s retail pricing page renders its plan prices client-side, and fetched on 2026-09-14 it contained no dollar amount and no percentage anywhere — only the tier names Starter, Plus, Premium and Square Pro, the last custom-quoted for sellers "If you process over $250,000 per year". Ask Square, or open the page in a browser. Subscription figures quoted in review articles are the reviewers’, not Square’s.
What does it cost to add the fifth person to the system? Two users are included; each extra user is $29/user/mo. Five users on Pro is $149 + $87 = $236/mo.No per-user software subscription fee is named anywhere on Square’s retail pricing page (checked 2026-09-14). The only per-person charge we found on Square’s own pages is Square Payroll, at $6 per person paid. For a store with staff that is a real cost advantage over our $29 a seat.
Can it run retail inventory — counts, purchase orders, cost of goods?Stock levels, an append-only movement ledger, purchase orders and receiving, an integrity audit that finds and corrects drift, and serialized items tracked unit by unit from receipt through sale to warranty. The retail pricing page’s feature grid lists "Inventory management and stock intake", "Vendor and purchase order management" and "Cost of goods sold and inventory reporting" from the Plus tier, and "Cross-location returns and fulfilment" and "Transfer orders" on Premium. The free tier’s entries are "Automatically create items and SKUs", "Discounts and refunds" and "Sales reporting". Per-unit serial-number tracking is not named in that grid (checked 2026-09-14).
Can it book, dispatch and cost a service call or repair job?A service line on a sales order becomes a job on a calendar, with a priced service profile, a skills and duration estimate, a printable or texted dispatch list, and actual start and end times, completion notes and a customer signature recorded on the job itself.Square Appointments handles booking, and names appointment reminders, a booking website, class booking, multi-location scheduling and a waitlist. Work orders, technician dispatch, parts against a job and a dispatch list are not named on that page (checked 2026-09-14).
Can it schedule and route a delivery, and prove it arrived?A driver-grouped day board, one-click route sequencing, a texted route link the driver opens with no app install, and proof of delivery — signature, timestamp, GPS and photos — that the database locks against editing once captured. Delivery Routing & Dispatch is an optional paid add-on enabled per store, the same as Bank Reconciliation and the Customer Portal; contact sales for its price.Delivery scheduling, multi-stop route sequencing, a driver dispatch link and signature proof of delivery are not named in the feature grid on Square’s retail pricing page (checked 2026-09-14). Square does sell pickup and local delivery for online orders elsewhere in its product line; we could not get that page to render for us, so we are not quoting it.
Can I take a card, and what is the rate?Integrated card payments are a paid add-on running on your own Stripe account, with Stripe smart readers and payment links. You pay Stripe’s standard rates plus a small UpChannels per-charge platform fee shown in your payment settings — we do not publish one all-in number, which is a fair thing to hold against us. Bring your own processor instead and the UpChannels fee is 0%.Published plainly, and that is worth something. Square Free: tap/dip/swipe 2.6% + 15¢, online and invoices 3.3% + 30¢, ACH 1% with a $1 minimum, keyed or card-on-file 3.5% + 15¢. Square Plus: 2.5% + 15¢ in person, 2.9% + 30¢ online, ACH 1% capped at $10. Square Premium: 2.4% + 15¢ in person, 2.9% + 30¢ online. (Square’s own fee article, checked 2026-09-14.)
Can I ring up a lease-to-own, trade-in or store-credit sale as its own tender? The payment_method type carries 46 tenders, including eight named lease-to-own and financing providers — Acima, Snap, Progressive, Katapult, Okinus, American First, FlexShopper and a generic Financing — plus trade-in credit, store credit, gift card, loyalty points, warranty claim and consignment payout. Each one reports as itself instead of landing in "Other".Afterpay is documented as a tender: "4 interest-free installments over 6 weeks", the seller paid "In full, immediately", at 6% + 30 cents. Cash App Pay, gift cards and card-on-file are documented in the fee article. No lease-to-own or rent-to-own provider is named on Square’s Buy Now, Pay Later page (checked 2026-09-14). This is not exclusive ground — STORIS, a furniture and appliance ERP, has treated lender application and settlement as first-class for years — but no platform priced for a single-location independent documents it.
Is there a staff time clock and a shift schedule? No, and this is the plainest gap on the page. There is no punch clock, no weekly rota and no shift-swap board in the shipped product. If you need one you will run Square, Homebase or similar alongside us — say so on the call and we will price it honestly.Yes, and it is the strongest thing here for them. "Square Shifts is included in Square Plus and Square Premium," and the page names scheduling and shift management, time tracking and attendance, automatic timecards, overtime and break tracking, time-off requests, shift swapping, tip and commission management, and labor-cost reporting. (Square Shifts page, checked 2026-09-14.)
Does it run payroll? No. There is no payroll and no tax filing anywhere in the product. Stores that use us keep Gusto, Square Payroll or their bookkeeper.Yes, natively. Square Payroll is $35/mo plus a $6 monthly fee per person paid, with "Automated federal tax payments and filings" and "Automated state tax payments and filings". Contractor-only payroll is $6/mo per person paid. (Square Payroll pricing, checked 2026-09-14.)
Can I close the month — P&L, balance sheet, bank reconciliation?Double-entry ledger accounts and journal entries behind a P&L, an assets-and-liabilities statement, expense tracking and income-tax prep, on Pro and above. Bank Reconciliation is a paid add-on: Plaid bank feeds with up to 24 months of history, scored match suggestions, and a statement period that will not close until the difference is zero.Sales reporting is named on every tier and cost-of-goods and inventory reporting from Plus. A general ledger, a balance sheet or bank-feed reconciliation is not named in the feature grid on Square’s retail pricing page (checked 2026-09-14). Square Payroll separately documents a QuickBooks Online integration.
Does a human help me set it up and move my data in?Yes, and it is half of what we sell. A services team does setup, data migration off your current system, and the integration wiring — QuickBooks, your processor, supplier feeds. Scoped as a project with its own quote, not bundled, so you can see what you are buying."Hardware discounts, onboarding and implementation support, technical specialists, and account management" are named under Square Pro, the custom-quoted tier for sellers processing over $250,000 a year. On the published tiers, 24/7 phone support is named on Premium. (Retail pricing page, checked 2026-09-14.)
Am I locked into a contract?Month-to-month. 14-day free trial with no credit card, and plan changes take effect on the next billing cycle. Annual billing is available on request.Square’s payroll pricing page states "No commitment, no long-term contracts required". We could not read contract terms off the retail pricing page, because its text did not render for us on 2026-09-14 — the free trial is offered on each tier there but its length is a template placeholder. Ask Square for the retail terms in writing.

Choose Square for Retail if

  • You need a time clock and a shift schedule in the same subscription. Square Shifts is included in Square Plus and Square Premium, and Square Payroll is $35/mo plus $6 per person paid. We have neither, and pretending otherwise would waste your time.
  • The sale ends at the counter. If the customer walks out with the goods, nothing in this comparison — routing, proof of delivery, work orders, lender tenders — is worth an extra subscription to you, and Square is both cheaper on hardware and more proven at checkout.
  • You want a published card rate you can budget against. Square prints 2.6% + 15¢ down to 2.4% + 15¢ by tier, and its online, ACH and keyed rates alongside them. Our card add-on runs on your own Stripe account at Stripe’s rates plus a per-charge platform fee we quote rather than publish.
  • You are adding staff fast on a thin margin. We found no per-user software fee on Square’s retail pricing page; we include two users and charge $29/user/mo after that, so a ten-person shop pays us considerably more.

Choose UpChannels if

  • Your staff delivers and installs what you sell — furniture, mattresses, garden equipment, liquidation pallets, large electronics — and you need the day routed, the driver dispatched by text, and a signature and GPS stamp on the drop that nobody can edit afterwards.
  • You both sell things and service them: an HVAC or plumbing shop that sells equipment and installs it, a bike or jewelry store with a repair bench, a garden centre that plants what it sells. A service line on the order becomes a job on the calendar with its real start and end times on the record.
  • You take lease-to-own, trade-ins, store credit and warranty claims, and you are tired of every one of them being rung up as "Other" and reconciled by hand at the end of the month.
  • You want the month to close inside the same system that took the money — a real P&L and balance sheet, and a bank feed matched against what you recorded — instead of exporting to a spreadsheet and hoping it ties.
Common questions

Switching from Square for Retail

Can I keep Square and use UpChannels for the rest?
Yes, and plenty of stores should. Square keeps the counter, the time clock and payroll; UpChannels takes orders, delivery, service jobs, tenders and the books. Our integration team wires the two together as a scoped project. It costs more than one system, so ask us to price both before you decide.
How do I move my catalog and customers off Square?
Square lets you export your items, customers and sales history from your dashboard, and we import from those files. The one thing no export carries is open work in flight — undelivered orders, deposits taken, jobs half done — so we set a cutover date, bring history in cold, and enter the open items by hand. Data migration is part of our setup engagement, quoted before it starts.
Am I signing a contract with either of you?
UpChannels is month-to-month with a 14-day free trial and no credit card, and plan changes take effect on the next billing cycle. For Square, the only contract language we could read on their own pages on 2026-09-14 was on the payroll pricing page — "No commitment, no long-term contracts required" — and the retail pricing page did not render its terms for us, so get those from Square directly. The thing that actually locks you in either way is the data, which is why we will export yours on request.
What breaks on day one if I switch?
The time clock and the shift schedule. If your staff punches in on Square Shifts today, none of that exists in UpChannels and you will need to keep Square, or move to Gusto, Homebase or similar. Payroll is the same story. Your card rate also changes, because ours runs through your own Stripe account rather than Square’s. Items, customers, orders and purchase orders carry over.
Is UpChannels cheaper than Square for Retail?
We cannot tell you, and neither can anyone quoting a Square monthly price they did not read from Square. Their retail pricing page rendered no figure for us on 2026-09-14. What we can say: Square charges no per-user software fee that we could find while we charge $29 a seat after the first two, so on headcount alone we get more expensive as you hire. Get Square’s number from Square, add up what you would otherwise buy alongside it — a routing tool, a field-service tool, a bookkeeper’s reconciliation time — and do the arithmetic for your own store.
Who should not buy UpChannels?
A single-counter shop with no deliveries, no service calls, no financed tenders and a bookkeeper who is happy — you will pay us for capability you never open. A business whose main problem is staff scheduling and payroll. And anyone who needs a published, flat card rate today rather than a quoted one.
